Hi everyone, Picket the Pup here! You know, just because it may be hard for me to salute, doesn’t mean I don’t feel grateful every day for all the wonderful men and women who have served our country, past or present. These brave military members (and their families, I might add) know what it means to spend their lives in an effort to protect our freedom. As Memorial Day approaches, it is important to remember the adage, “all gave some, some gave all” and I think it is important to support and honor ALL of them.
We here at Florida Fence think that one way we can do that (even without saluting) is to look for local businesses that are owned by current or former military members. Some businesses advertise they are “veteran-owned”, but every now and then my humans find places that don’t. So, I thought I would tell you a little about just two of them today, and, and I hope with the holiday coming up you will take the time to check them out since Kevin and Theresa tell me their fare is yummy.
- Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar: Owned by Roy LaLone, this wonderful seafood restaurant is located on the historic Phillippi Creek just off South Tamiami Trail. With both indoor and outdoor waterfront dining available, this tropical style, casual restaurant has been voted “Best of the Best” raw food and seafood restaurant twelve, yes, twelve years in a row! The tourist season is wrapping up, so this is a WONDERFUL time to check them out for lunch or dinner! It’s a great place for the whole family or for a date night for mom and dad!
- JDubs Brewing Company: And now, a little something for your grownups ? Founded and owned by Jeremy Joerger, a veteran who started tinkering with a home brewing kit nearly 15 years ago, this brewery and tap room boasts a wide variety of innovative and traditional flavors of craft beers. They pride themselves on quality, they are there daily, and, of course, my favorite thing? They are dog-friendly! ? So be sure to head over to Mango Avenue (with your pup) and have a cold one! And…we did the fence at JDubs…we’re kinda proud of that!
So, go ahead, eat, drink and be merry! After all, you are FREE to do so! And, when you go, don’t forget to thank these military folks for their service to our great nation! And, of course, tell them Picket sent you!
